Will

“Will?” Amy asked, making sure she had heard it right.

“It’s really William, but I’ve always gone by Will,” he said. “Can I get you anything? Maybe something to drink?”

“Would it be from the hose?” Amy joked.

“We’re fine,” Heather said quickly. “We’d just like to know more about Cookie Crawford. We met her at her shop before she was killed. She seemed like a nice lady.”

“Oh, she was the best,” Will said. “She was kind and sweet and funny. And she made the most delicious cakes.”

“I can attest to that,” Amy agreed.

“That’s how we became close. Cookie made it a point to know all of her neighbors’ birthdays and would bring them a cake on it. When she brought it to me, she noticed that I wasn’t celebrating. I said what should I be celebrating – another year of feeling alone? She told me that she had also been feeling lonely since her daughter moved out. Her husband had died a long time ago. She suggested that we share the cake together. We hit it off right away. Oh, she made me feel so special.”

“Do you know if anyone had a problem with your relationship?” asked Heather.

“I don’t know who would,” Will said. “We were both older and single. And though I feel like it was the real thing, we hadn’t been together too long. Only a few months. We hadn’t been telling everyone about our relationship because it had been so long since we had done this sort of thing.”

“So, you never met her daughter?” asked Heather.

“Just in passing,” he replied. “We’ve waved, and she knew me as the neighbor. She didn’t know that I was dating her mother. At least, I don’t think so.”

“And you had a good relationship with Cookie?” asked Amy.

“It was still new, but it was wonderful,” said Will wistfully. “I thought we could have been together forever. But someone stole her from me.”

“Do you have any idea who that person could have been?” asked Heather gently.

“There wasn’t another man,” said Will. “At least on her end. Maybe someone else was in love with her too and became wildly jealous and struck out in revenge.”

“Normally poisoners are more meticulous,” said Amy. “It’s not usually a crime of passion like a stabbing.”

“She was poisoned?” asked Will.

“I’m afraid she was,” said Heather.

“I didn’t know all the details,” Will said, tearing up again. “I’ve been fearing the worst. I hope she didn’t suffer.”

“I believe it was relatively quick,” said Heather. She didn’t comment on how she had once been poisoned with cyanide and how painful it had been. Cookie had been able to get to the phone to call for help, which showed what a strong lady she was.

“And,” Amy said, trying to make it sound better, “you might be able to look at it as she died doing what she loved. She was eating her wonderful cakes.”

“Or you could look at it like what she loved killed her,” Will said sullenly. “Oh, I don’t know what I’m going to do without her.
